Background of the Study
Online discourse has transformed traditional language structures, particularly through the innovative use of platforms like Twitter. In Nigeria, the structure of Twitter threads has introduced novel syntactic patterns that diverge from formal written language. This study examines the impact of online discourse on Nigerian syntax, focusing on how the segmented nature of Twitter threads contributes to syntactic evolution (Ibrahim, 2023). The analysis centers on the sequential construction of ideas within threads, where punctuation, sentence structure, and lexical choices are reconfigured to fit the digital format. Such transformations reflect both the constraints and creative possibilities of online communication. The study underscores the significance of understanding these syntactic variations as a product of evolving digital practices. As language adapts to the brevity and immediacy of Twitter, new syntactic forms emerge that challenge traditional grammatical conventions. This research aims to document these syntactic innovations and assess their broader implications for language use in Nigerian digital communities (Obi, 2024). By analyzing Twitter thread structures, the study provides a detailed account of how digital media fosters linguistic change and what this signifies for the future of Nigerian syntax.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing importance of digital discourse, the impact of Twitter thread structures on Nigerian syntax has not been adequately addressed in existing research. Traditional syntactic frameworks do not fully capture the innovative structures emerging from online discourse. This gap presents challenges for understanding how digital platforms influence language evolution in Nigeria. The study seeks to address this issue by investigating the syntactic patterns evident in Twitter threads and their implications for broader linguistic practices. The lack of systematic analysis in this area hinders the development of comprehensive models of digital language transformation, thereby necessitating focused research on this phenomenon (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the syntactic structures present in Nigerian Twitter threads.

  • To analyze the impact of digital discourse on traditional syntactic norms.

  • To evaluate the broader implications of Twitter-induced syntactic innovations.

Research Questions

  • What syntactic patterns are evident in Nigerian Twitter threads?

  • How does online discourse influence traditional syntactic norms?

  • What are the broader implications of syntactic innovations driven by digital media?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of how Twitter thread structures are reshaping Nigerian syntax. The insights gained will benefit linguists, digital communication experts, and educators by offering a framework to understand and adapt to evolving language practices. It highlights the transformative power of digital media in driving linguistic change (Umeh, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to evaluating online discourse on Twitter and its effect on Nigerian syntax. It does not consider other social media platforms or broader linguistic phenomena beyond syntax.

Definitions of Terms

  • Online Discourse: Communication and exchange of ideas conducted via digital platforms.

  • Syntax: The set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences in a language.

  • Twitter Thread: A series of connected tweets from a single user that form a continuous narrative or discussion.
